Steaphen Fick
Bringing history alive is the passion of Steaphen Fick, founder
of the Davenriche Martial Artes School (DEMAS), located in San Jose
and Gilroy. Based on an ancient European style of self-defence (old
English spelling), students from age six to seventy-six learn how
to safely swing swords, fight with long sticks, daggers and rapiers,
and learn other techniques that were part of the tradition of knights
from centuries ago.
Fascinated by the “days of yore,” Steaphen began sword
fighting in full armor for a tournament company in 1989. Initially,
he learned how to compete through what might literally be called
the school of hard knocks. Subsequently, while on his honeymoon
in Europe, he had the good fortune to spend some time in Edinburgh,
Scotland meeting with Maestro Paul Macdonald, and on a return trip
was able to spend six months studying 11 different weapons and unarmoured
styles, as well as age-old wrestling techniques. Learning from historical
manuals obtained from libraries, museums and collectors, Steaphen
studied and currently teaches:
14th-16th Century Long Sword – like Lord of the Rings and
Braveheart
15th Century Dagger – similar to our modern day dagger
15th Century Self Defence – based on a martial arts style
from Italy
16th Century Side Sword – cut and thrust sword
16th -17th Century Rapier – Three Musketeers’ style
19th Century Sabre – Napoleonic War style sword
Steaphen teaches adults and children at his schools in San Jose,
Gilroy and Morgan Hill.
